2 Minute Tip #21 - Write Your Teen a Love Note

My tip this week is
Write your Teen a Love Note >>Listen

When your child was little did you ever put a little love note in her lunchbox? Silly as it may seem, it may be time to resurrect this loving gesture.

As a parent, I’m sure there are many ways you let your teenager know that you love her. Your generosity as you help her buy a few new items to start the school year, and your thoughtfulness in preparing his favorite meal before the first soccer game are surely appreciated, even if your teen doesn’t always say “thank you.” Let’s tune in closely to what your teenager may be feeling…

Remember what it was like getting on the bus at the beginning of the school year? And walking into home room the first day of school?  It’s exciting, and a bit scary. For some kids, it’s really scary. Put yourself into your teenager’s shoes, you can understand why she seems a bit anxious, or loud, or tired right now. She’s nervous.

What are some age-appropriate and welcome ways you can remind him of your unconditional support and love? Don’t embarrass him by over-doing this. Make your statement in quiet ways. A personal little note in her backpack, a note of encouragement on his mirror…be creative…think of how you can be the “wind beneath his wings.”

Gentle reminders that you are always there, backing her up will go a long way. When he gets scared or needs confidence or reassurance, he’ll hear your voice and know you’re there behind him.
