Respect Your Intuition…Two Minute Tip #12

Hi – Sue Blaney here with your Parenting Tip from Parenting Teens Info.com

My tip this week is to
Respect your intuition  >>Listen

How often do you listen to your gut? When it comes to parenting, your intuition is often very reliable. I encourage you to give it credence and listen well. Because if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

How does your intuition inform you? It varies in different people. Some people get intuitive messages through physical sensations, others through dreams or images, and for some it comes as an inner sense of knowing. It matters less how you get these messages than it does that you pay attention to them.

Remember when your child was a baby and you knew when he had an ear infection before the doctor could tell? You can tell when something is “off” with your child – and your teenager - because your 6th sense kicks into gear.

But hear me on this: I’m not saying to immediately act on everything your intuition tells you because there is a lot of room for interpretation. Think of your intuitive messages as suggestions that you check something out further…as tips that more investigation is needed. We know that teenagers are sometimes difficult to read and may hold things back from parents, which can complicate matters for you. While I encourage you to listen to your intuition I also suggest it’s a good idea to use it as a red flag…a guide that you need to gather more information; and be sure to do this before you jump to conclusions and take action.

What is your intuition telling you about your teenager right now? Is he settled in and doing well or in a state of emotional upheaval? Does she seem confident and involved in school or is she hiding her school work from you? Use your intuition to help you gather information so you can provide the support your teenager needs.
