Communicating with Teens… Two-Minute Tip #1

Sometimes parents so want to have effective communication with their teenagers they simply try too hard! My tip today is to RELAX and aim for CONNECTION rather than COMMUNICATION.
When you connect, you share experiences and provide the conditions
under which communication can occur. You can't have good
communication without being connected. Connection provides the
pre-requisite for good communication.
So how can you connect with your teenager this week? You can go out
of your way to sit and watch her favorite tv show with her. You can
offer to take him out for a burger at his favorite restaurant. You
can turn your cell phone and computer off, and hang around in the
kitchen when they are snacking; listening, sharing, being
light-hearted and fun to be around. And you can take their lead and
do something with them that you know they love to do.
Go for "connection." You'll get results!
